sockdown

I can't believe it's already Friday. Where did the week go?

Thanks for all the nice comments about Geoff's quilt! I've got the outer border on the fishy quilt sewn on. I'll be assembling the backing fabric today and since it's nice and cool, I'll get down on the floor and baste all the layers. I borrowed a few books from a quilting friend and I'll be looking for quilting ideas for the blocks. I have a border stencil picked out. I am using a blue and white variegated thread for the quilting.

I got lots of knitting done. The chestnut sock (2 of 24) is about halfway to the toe. I should get it done this weekend if there aren't too many distractions.

And I signed up for Sockdown on Ravelry. For August, your choices are a Sockbug pattern or a lace pattern (your choice of designer). I chose Sockbug's River Rapids pattern. I am knitting them toe up so the lace pattern is going the other way but I don't think it really matters. I cast on yesterday and I was on round 12 of the lace pattern when I realized that I forgot to knit plain stockinette on the sole of the foot. Doh! So I had to rip back to the toe and start again. I'm such a doofus. I've completed 2 repeats of the lace pattern and it looks much better on the foot than it does in the picture.

I am using 2.5mm needles and Cherry Tree Hill fingering instead of the 2.75mm and sportweight yarn that the pattern recommends. Other knitters who have chosen the same pattern are expressing concerns about the size of the sock with a gauge of 7 sts/inch and a cast on of 64. So I decided to go small with both the needle and yarn. I am contemplating one mod to the pattern. I have short legs and large calves and I find that I need a lot of leg ribbing to make a sock stay up/fit well. So I might knit 2x2 ribbing on the back of the leg rather than the lace.

Oh, I ordered sock yarn this week. I said that I wasn't going to buy more yarn but I had to. It's just one skein and it's been something that I've been thinking about for awhile. I got the discontinued Trekking XXL colour 126 - some call it neopolitan other's call it candy. It's taken me awhile to find someone who has it and I bought the last skein that they had. I'm happy now.

ETA: Ummm... My yarn arrived about 10 mins after posting this. I only ordered it yesterday just after lunch. It took 21 hours to get here. That must be a new record.
