Happy Bloggiversary to us!

It's our first ever bloggiversary! One year of knit blogging down and many more to go ;)

So as a thank you to our readers, we're having a contest. To enter, leave a comment (one per person please) before midnight PST Jan 31st. And in your comment, please include a link to a knitted rectangular stole that you think Gladys should make (she's got a lot of lace yarn and she's looking for the right pattern).

Gladys says: This was inspired by Vicki's contest last year at Simple Knits. She was looking for triangle shawl ideas and ended up with 336 patterns, sorted by amount of yarn required. I love triangle shawls, but I'd like to do a rectangular stole, and I've got a lot of laceweight yarn, thanks to a few sales this month! (Dotty enabled me into the Ram Wools sale, where I also picked up some sea silk.) I'll sort all of our entries by amount of yarn too, so that at the end of this contest, we'll also have a useful list for everyone's reference!

We will be drawing for at least 2 prizes (we reserve the right to add more if there are lots of entries! :)

Gladys is giving away 2 balls of Jojoland Quartette in Blue Rose Sprucestone. It's a very soft merino-cashmere blend fingering-weight yarn.

Dotty will make a fabric project bag (winner chooses fabric) and it will include some hand dyed bamboo yarn plus a few more goodies. Don't these sound great?

Go leave a comment and good luck to everyone!

My nominations are:

and

I probably should have used two different comments. But hey, oh well.

I like the proportions of both wraps and the symmetry of their design!

I'm really not a huge fan of stoles or rectangular shawls. I either like them triangular or long skinny scarf - but that's just me! I do love this pattern though and actually went out of my way to purchase it for "someday":

The Hanami stole is lovely and never boring to knit since it morphs as it grows.

Not technically a stole, but a Faroese shawl, the Irtfa'a from Knitspot is awesome! It's on my list of things to knit soon.

I was hoping someone would take on the rectangular stoles. Keeping the triangle shawl list up-to-date is all I can handle. LOL!

I'm submitting my new lace pattern which is a stole--Promenade. You can find it on my blog.

Looks like both of mine have been suggested - I really like http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEfall07/PATTmuir.html , but it uses what looks to be a sport weight yarn.

http://www.eunnyjang.com/images/knit/0511joycesscarf/stole_print_o_the_wave.pdf uses laceweight, though!

I'm knitting Spring Shawl Surprise at the moment - which despite the name is a rectangular stole.
But I would nominate the Sampler Stole from Folk Shawls. It's not hard to knit, yet interesting because you change patterns regularly.
There is a picture of it here:

I recommend the Arctic Diamonds Stole by Donna Druchunas, Interweave Knits, Winter 2006. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/arctic-diamonds-stole

Another lovely rectangular shawl/stole is Cheryl Oberle's Kimono Shawl, from her book Folk Shawls:
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kimono-shawl

IvanovaKnits said...

For a book nomination, there's Victorian Lace Today by Jane Sowerby with many rectangular shawl patterns:
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/victorian-lace-today/patterns

And for freebies there are a couple from Knitty:
1. Cozy:
http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/PATTcozy.html
this one uses a heavier weight yarn, but with some swatching it should be do-able in lace weight yarn.

2. Leaves and Waves:
http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall04/PATTleaves.html
This one's more of a square but it's still gorgeous! The Leafy part could be modified into a stole...

3. Muir:
http://knitty.com/ISSUEfall07/PATTmuir.html
I'm intrigued by this one... if only I had more time!

There's also a nice lacy scarf on the Garnstudio-Drops website:
http://www.garnstudio.com/lang/en/visoppskrift.php?d_nr=86&d_id=2&lang=us
with a few more pattern repeats it would easily become a stole.

And I also have a stole pattern available for free on my blog:
http://iandcknit.blogspot.com/2007/09/tara-stole-pattern.html

Happy Blogiversary!

I am currently making my mother (using Patons Rumor) & myself (using Reynolds Smile) a shawl using the following pattern:

Note: Knit 1 below (K1below): Insertright needle into center of st in row below st on left needle & knit a new st, then drop the original st from the left needle.

co66sts
3 row seed stitch border
Pattern Row 1: P1, K1, P1, K to last 3 sts, K1, P1, K1
Pattern Row 2: K1, P1, K1, *K1, K1below; repeat from * to last 3 sts, P1, K1, P1
Pattern Row 3: P1, K1, P1, K to last 3 sts, K1, P1, K1
Pattern Row 4: K1, P1, K1, *K1below, K1; repeat from * to last 3 sts, P1, K1, P1

Knit to desired length then complete with 3 row seed stitch border. BO & weave in ends. Enjoy!

I developed this pattern using the stitch pattern of the Leavened Raglan by Carrie Bostick Hoge from Interweave Knits Fall 2007

Happy Blogiversary! I enjoyed doing the Ostrich Plumes stole. It's a variation of feather and fan. I don't think the pattern is available online, but it's on my Ravelry project queue if you are interested in seeing it and the book it came from.

I believe that Jenny of Loves to Bike and Knit has also been compiling a list of rectangular shawls too. You might find some other suggestions there. Good luck!

Anonymous said...

336 patterns! Wow, hope you get ust as many. What a great idea. I nominate my Malabrigo feather and fan stole. It's based on Jo Sharp's Misty Garden in Scarf Style. I just widened it quite a bit. It would be nice in a lace yarn with slight variegation in the colour.

Happy Bloggiversary, a bit late!

I'm working on the Myrtle leaf shawl right now (and loving it), but I can't believe no one's suggested the
Large Rectangular Shawl in Leaf and Trellis Pattern
from Victorian Lace Today. If you're looking to use up a lot of laceweight, it'd do the trick, plus you could knit it using just about any kind of fiber.

That's my vote-- and keep up the blogging! :)

Not that I've ever knit a stole (or shawl or anything other than vaguely lacy) but I'm recommending the Oh! Canada Stole : http://knitspot.com/?p=526
